Residential

Leonard Lodge

Summary

This contemporary cabin-style residence is situated on a very steep hillside, surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest.  The challenge was to design the house to become the client's future retirement home.  Because of the steep slope of the site, it was a challenge to design an accessible, single-level home.  The solution developed into an upper main level, accessible by a wheelchair from a parking area at the front entrance.  The main level includes all spaces needed for daily use, including three bedrooms.  The lower level houses the garage and workshop as well as a large bonus room with a full bath, which can be used as an additional bedroom or entertainment space.  A walk-in closet on each level, adjacent to the stairway, has been designed to accommodate a future residential elevator, if required.

Elizabeth and I were referred to Carole by our real estate agent, and went to Carole’s home to meet her and to view first hand her design work. We liked Carole immediately and decided soon thereafter to employ Carole as the architect to design our home. Her contractual terms were reasonable and she had a pre-existing relationship with a general contractor whom she recommended to us for our consideration.

Carole soon visited the home site with us and took several pictures, which she placed together over her computer to form a panorama of the home site. She used the site visit and the site panorama to help her with the orientation of the home, the location of the garage and with the placement of windows throughout the home to maximize the view. Once the plans were finalized Carole helped us select the interior and exterior color schemes for the home as well as kitchen and bath fixtures and finishes and lighting fixtures. She was very interactive throughout the construction phase and helped us with the myriad of decisions we needed to make regarding the various finishes for interior flooring, ceiling beams, counter tops and cabinetry. As a result of this collaboration we now have a gorgeous home with wonderful panoramic views.

Should we decide to undertake something like this again Carole would be the first person we would contact regarding the design of the home.
